Hoppy Easter Blog Hop

Almost forgot to post this, this morning.  Wow what a busy week leading up to Easter and I can say that it's full of the normal chaos.  And a little extra chaos so it seems for my family, since this year like it does so ever often my birthday actually lands on Easter Sunday.  I'm still not sure exactly how they figure out which Sunday Easter is supposed to land on but nonetheless it's once again it has landed on my birthday - I could care less but my family refuses to let me skip it.  But you probably ask why does this matter, well *smile* I'll get to that.  Everyone usually has wonderful Easter memories and for a chance to win my prize, which happens to be this lovely basket below, all I need you to do is to comment and tell me what your most amusing or touching Easter memory is.  And relax - I wouldn't ask anything of you that I won't do myself.  Remember me saying about my birthday landing on Easter?

Well let me tell you a tale of little Dakota  - of the first time her birthday landed on Easter Sunday. She was only five and since we were all meeting at my Grandma and Grandpa Coghlan's house, the family decided to throw in an extra presents, cake and ice cream to celebrate.  She had lots of fun with her cousins - joining the Easter Egg Hunt - playing with Lady, her grandparents' "lassie dog" as she called it.  She even had a huge meal full of ham, pineapple, grams homemade mashed taters and even some kolaches that gram had made special because the birthday girl had asked so nicely.

Then came the big moment - everyone gathered around  while Grandpa lit five little candles on the cake Grandma made for little Dakota.  The family sang happy birthday, Dakota made a wish and blew out the candles.  Everything was great - that was until Grandma went to cut the cake and little Dakota flipped out. Nothing anyone could say would calm her down. She cried and carried on - refusing to eat the cake...and why?

Well you see, Grams had made Dakota's cake to be shaped like a real bunny - in theme with the holiday.  It honest to God looked like one of those long eared jumbo bunnies that Dakota had seen on Grams farm.    It wasn't a flat sheet cake, she'd actually found a mold somewhere that looked like a real bunny once it was frosted. She'd even used colored coconut to make the fur look like Dakota's favorite bunny.  Unfortunately for Grams the birthday girl was too little to understand the difference between a well done cake and the real thing.

At the time it wasn't funny, and I'm sure my parents were mortified, but I still remember Grams cutting into the cake - a red velvet chocolate (which is still one of my favorites) and thinking that she'd just killed my favorite bunny. (I was such a little drama queen at the age).  I never did eat any of the cake and of course my parents' blamed my behavior on me being overly tired and laid me down for a nap while the rest of the family ate my "bunny" cake.  I still get teased to this day when I go up for Easter and this year will probably be worse since my birthday - once again has fallen on the holiday as my aunts and uncles tell stories around the table about previous Easters.  I just laugh and say, "come on I was only five."

Okay now that you've heard my humorous Easter tale, tell me about one of your fond memories of Easter for a chance to win this.  And don't forget to go HERE to find all the other participating members of the Hoppy Easter blog hop!

  1. My younger sister has a birthday, too, that falls on Easter every so often. We are about 11 years apart, so when she was born, I got to stay at my grandparents house. They actually had a chicken farm, and I loved petting the chicks. I had a really fun time dyeing eggs with them. Plus, I got to have a little sister. It was a really good Easter.

  2. No funny stories here. I just look back on my childhood and have the warm fuzzies.

My Mama always made a big deal on Easter. We always went out and got a new dress for Easter. But one year she made our dresses. Mother and daughter matching outfits....I felt so grown up, I way 10, and beautiful.

After church we would go to the IHOP for pancakes. Then Mama always made a wonderful dinner.(this was in the 60's - so everything was from scratch)..

God, Family and food ---what wonderful memories!

  3. My memory concerns the date, but not Easter per se. It's my son's birthday, so this year, as it has before, it falls on Easter. The memory I cherish is of his birth, 21 years ago this Sunday. He's my last baby born, so he'll always be youngest. When he was born, he was beautiful. Of course. But his nose was just a little big for his body, and he ended up being nicknamed "Pizza, pizza" after the Little Caesar's character. He's grown into that nose since, but I still smile when I think of it, and his sister still says it now and then.

    Happy Easter and Happy Birthday!

  4. Well since Easter was always busy in our house because of calving season, it wasn't celebrated very much, though I do remember the one year my mother told me she saw bunny tracks heading through the living room, that is where the Easter basket was hidden.

  7. Wow - note to self - never make an animal cake for my children with red velvet cake on their birthdays until they're teenagers (when they probably won't want one) lol. As for Easter, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and it always rained on Easter. So we always wore raincoats and rubber boots to find the plastic eggs (those boots were great places to hide extra eggs) ;)

  16. First, thank you for the giveaway. Now on to the story. My grandmother used to always get those cases of Cadbury eggs. They were my favorite. Well as a child, if I saw chocolate I would eat it all at one time like any other child would you know? Well Gramma believed in ONE EGG A DAY! Noooooooooo! I had to sit there all month and know I would only get one a day. When we got to that last egg I used to think "I really should have eaten that slower." It's funny now but wasn't back then.
    Happy Easter!

  18. Freshmen year in college Easter landed towards the end of the spring semester. I was in my room with my roommate, we were eating some Easter candy our families had sent us and probably watching She's All That for the millionth time. Well theirs a knock at the door and my friend comes in, and just without even thinking, I kid you not starts giving us details of how just about an hour or so ago she lost her virginity. Then she just walked out. My roommate got up, locked the door, sat back at her desk and said, "Let's keep that locked before she comes back with more information."
It was a really odd night after that.

  22. When I was young we used to go the the park where they were holding sunrise Easter services. I always loved getting up early and attending them with my family. I don't remember us ever hiding Easter eggs, but when I had kids of my own I always made sure we colored eggs and had an Easter egg hunt.

  23. I have so few Easter memories! I do have one vivid memory, however. I was around 8 or 9 years old and there was an assortment of goodies in a little basket...including a tall white chocolate bunny with it's ears missing. My mother tried to tell me that that was the way he was supposed to be, but I didn't fall for it. I knew she had broken off those bunny ears to nibble on!

    Happy Easter!

  24. That is a sweet story and funny. I remember my first big egg hunt. My mom had just married my new da and he took us up to his parents and my new grannie took us kids to the fairgrounds for a big community egg hunt. I was afraid to go hunt for the hunt for the eggs even though they were just laying everywhere on the ground. I was very shy as a child, I used to hide under my mothers clothes I was so shy. My grannie tried to get me to go on but I wouldn't and so she took my hand and led me over to some eggs and helped me pick them up. I think I even found a prize egg and I too was about 5-6 years old.

  26. Well my birthday fall in November and when it's on a Thursday its on Thanksgiving, funny thing is it's the same with my Mom and my Daughter. But one of my favorite Easter Memories is 2 years ago when my Granddaugher came over and we hid a few eggs for her to have a egg hunt. I had also bought her a pink plastic chair so she could have it in her yard because they have lots of cookouts. Well we could not stop laughing because she did hunt for the eggs but did it with that chair in one hand and a basket in the other. She would set the chair down grab the egg put in the basket and p/u the chair again. It was so sweet.

  28. Well one year my family went to my uncle's Easter celebration. I don't remember how old I was, I just remember that I didn't want to go because my cousin was so snobby.

So there we were doing our easter egg hunt, me in a dress (I hate dresses) in the heat outside. I felt kinda stupid and too old to be doing this stuff since her and I were the oldest kids there. It didn't feel right to find all these treats and the little kids not have so many.

Well one of the uncles he helped me out, he helped me find the last egg and I remember my cousin being so huffy that I found it too.

Well I think that was the first and last Easter I ever went over there for. Now my sister and I usually just make a bunny cake, and have fun just us three.

  31. One of my favorite Easter memories is when my siblings and i woke up to big baskets of candy and a board game a piece. We took all of our candy, threw it into one huge bowl, put it in the middle of the table and my famiy played our board games all day long. I remember having so much fun! Laughing, having a stomach ache from eating to much candy and nothing else! Its one of my favorite memories. :) Happy Easter! You have a wonderful time and have a great weekend! ;) Thank you for sharing and for the giveaway!
