Haunted House of Manlove Flash Hop

Once again it's time to celebrate with a House of Manlove's blog hop.  This time we're celebrating the fun time of All Hallow's Eve.  Or Halloween as my kiddos call it.  As an author who is scared to death of things that go bump in the night this was challenge for me. I don't do scary...so forgive me if my tale is frightening enough. Instead I wanted to give you a ghost story where redemption is the theme.  So read along as we find out of Kaden is strong enough to carry on without his lover, Eric, or if he's brave enough to take what Eric's ghost offers.

Oh and don't forget to check out the links at the end of the story.  It'll give you the schedule for the rest of the wonderful authors who will be celebrating all week long!

Twilight’s Embrace by Dakota Trace

CREAK!

Shivering against the rain, Kaden Shozavitz ignored the tingle of apprehension as he pushed open the door to the place he’d sworn never to return to– Bruceworth Manor. Soaked to the bone from his long walk up the graveled drive, after a tree crashed onto his car, he no longer cared he was seeking refuge in the home of his late lover, Eric Bruceworth the Third. It was shelter from the storm raging outside.

As he shut the door behind him, Kaden found it hard to believe it had been two years ago that he held Eric in his arms as his best friend and lover had drawn his last breath. The ravaging pancreatic cancer had eaten away at Eric, until he’d become a mere shell of the man Kaden had fallen in love with. But he’d stayed by his lover’s side ‘til the end as he’d promised.

“Don’t let me die alone in a hospital bed, tereso. Stay with me. Let your face be the last I see – your voice the last I hear – your arms the last I feel.”

Kaden had, even as the futility of the situation had torn him up. He’d remained at Eric’s side until the agonizing end. But once his lover had drawn his last breath, he’d gently closed Eric’s eyes, and sworn never to cross the threshold again.

“So why are you here?” His words echoed back at him as he stepped inside the foyer. “Because of that damned letter.”

The last thing he’d expected to receive a week before Halloween was a letter from Eric’s lawyer – a request from Eric – so the man claimed. The attorney said something about a ruling from the grave. But Kaden had been in a daze, understanding nothing after the “Eric requests your presence at Bruceworth on all Hallow’s Eve.”

Reaching out, he flicked on the light switch, sighing disgustedly when nothing happened. “Shit! At least he could’ve made sure the electricity was on.” After digging into his knapsack for his flashlight, he turned it on. The beam of light barely illuminated the cavernous foyer. Once it had been filled with life as Eric, an avid gardener, had kept his home over flowing with lush vegetation, but now it was a mockery of its former glory. The golden urns on either side of the door were empty, the sturdy oak table where he’d made love to Eric more than once was barren, and dust motes floated in the air.

He swung his bag back onto his shoulder. Shutting the door behind him, he drew a deep breath, stealing himself against the memories, and made his way down the hall toward his destination. His footsteps echoed as he crossed the marbled floor.

His palms were clammy as he turned the brass knob to Eric’s study. The silence inside the room sent shivers up his spine. Setting his bag down next to the desk, he sighed. The room was a little cleaner than foyer, but not by much. The pile of wood next to the massive fireplace told him that at least someone wanted to make sure he was comfortable despite the lack of electricity. Shrugging off his leather jacket, he draped it over the back of Erik’s massive chair.

“A fire is the first item on the agenda.”

* * * *

Several hours later, Kaden awoke surrounded by warmth and a body pressed between him and the back of the couch. Sometime during the night, the fire had died down but embers still burnt in the hearth. He probably should get up, but instead relaxed deeper into the embrace, feeling a contentment he hadn’t felt since they’d found out about Eric’s cancer. His eyes drifted back shut, sleep beaconing once more.

“Always such a sleepy head, tereso. Especially when you’re in my arms…”

Kaden’s eyes flew open in surprise. Despite his sleep-fogged mind and slower than normal responses, he recognized the expensive scent of Eric’s Italian cologne, and the long length of the man cradling him in the curve of his body. He shifted onto his back, squinting in the near darkness. “Eric?”

“I’ve missed you.” A hand brushed over his cheek. “More than you can know.” The words were breathed against Kaden’s lips, as Eric leaned over him.

Familiar desire flooded Kaden’s system. His body recognized the masterful touch and the taste of his lover. He moaned softly and pressed closer. He didn’t care if this was a dream. He needed this. He thrust his tongue into Eric’s mouth and clutched at his shoulders. He whimpered when Eric tore his mouth away.

“Shh...slow down. I’m not going anywhere.”

Eric’s familiar words settled like a red-hot poker in his groin. They’d always been followed by slow-but-demanding sex. Behind his constricting jeans, his cock wept with need.

“At least not yet.”

Kaden’s blood froze and he glared up at Eric’s shadowy face. “Not ever again.” He tried to shove Eric away, but his lover pinned him with ease.

“Hush, and listen.” Erik’s tone was firm.

“Don’t you hush me! You’ve been haunting me for the past two years. I can’t answer the phone without expecting to hear your voice, look up from my desk and not expect to see you there. Hell, I can’t even sleep without you haunting my dreams.” He shoved at Eric’s chest as tears burned the back of his eyes. “Damnit! You weren’t supposed to die! You weren’t supposed to leave me.”

“I know.” Eric cupped his chin. “Which is why I’m here now. You have a choice.”

“What do you mean… choice?” Kaden narrowed his eyes.

“You can continue as you are, or have me for an eternity.” Eric rubbed his thumb over Kaden’s lower lip.

“But you’re dead.” Kaden’s mind whirled. “You want me to commit suicide?”

Eric gave a slow shake of his head. “No. You’ve been in an accident. Your protettore told me it might be my last chance with you. He shouldn’t have, since his job is to protect you, but if you keep travelling down the path you’re headed, you’ll die anyway. The drink will kill you.”

“What did you expect me to do?” Kaden tried to free himself again. “Just continue on like you hadn’t died?”

This time Eric released him. “I expected you to grieve, then live a full and happy life. It’s what you promised me.”

Kaden rolled off the couch. “I lied. There will never be another for me. Damn it. You loved me too well. No man can replace you.”

Eric pushed himself up on one arm, the blanket pooling around his waist. “Then spend the rest of the night in my embrace. But do so realizing your protettore will be unable to save you this time – you will leave everything behind. However, you will be mine for eternity.”

Could he leave his job behind that kept him sane after Eric’s passing? His family who loved him, but truly didn’t understand him? Staring down at Eric, Kaden realized there was no choice. “You.” The word came out hoarse. “I choose you.”

“Then come here.” Eric lifted the blanket.

Contentment filled Kaden as he settled against Eric. He was home.

House of Manlove's Hot Summer Flash: Free to Dance

Let Freedom Ring...that's what we're celebrating on this wonderful Fourth of July and that should include everyone.  I happen to have the pleasure of living in one of the states which has already legalized same sex marriage.  Which means that I was able to see my younger sister marry her partner of many years.  So this blog hop has a special place in my heart.

So I'm proud to be one of the members of the House of Manlove who are bringing you wonderful flash pieces today.  As you hop, you'll find flashes that deal with one of two scenarios:  Freedom to Marry (like my flash, Free to Dance) and Midsummer Madness (a summer fling story like my alter-ego, ND is doing with Off-Limits).   Either way there will be plenty of sexy men to go around, so be sure to stop by each blog.

Freedom to Dance

“Allow me to present Mr. and Mr. Brenner – Claxton.” Reverend Phillips announced as he turned them to face the gathered family and friends. A cheer went up and the guests stood.

Adam’s heart filled with happiness as he looked down at his new husband. Now, that had a ring to it, he thought. Standing next to him, with his dark auburn hair mussed, Conner was just as sexy in the tux he’d donned for their nuptials as he had been the first time Adam had set eyes on him.…

“Who’s the new guy?” Adam yelled over the pounding bass. He nudged his friend, Thomas, and pointed to the little red-headed twink dancing in front of the long shiny pole on the center stage of the Wood Strip Club, a favored haunt of shifters and humans alike. His groin grew tight as the man in question caught ahold of the pole and swung himself around in an aerial display of raw strength and masculinity.

“Damned if I know, but I’d take a piece of that.” Thomas growled. “Just look at that ass. So tight you could bounce quarters off it.”

Adam dug his fingers into the scarred table that kept his erection from view as his bear stirred. “Mine!” The idea of the dancer going home with anyone other than him tonight made Adam want to tear into any male poaching on his territory.

Thomas must’ve recognized the threat in his tone, because his friend and Beta held up his hands. “Whoa, chill down the testosterone, buddy. If you want him that damned bad, far be it from me to stand in your way.” Thomas leaned in. “Calm your shit, before you shift right here and scare all the little humans away.”

He forced out a ragged breath, realizing his fangs were pressing his lower lip and his nails had lengthened. “Sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”

Thomas smacked him on the shoulder. “If I had to say, fate just stepped up and planted a great big old kiss on your lips. Your single days of boffing everything with a pulse are over…”

And how right his friend had been, Adam mused. Connor, as he’d later found out his mate’s name was, had ended up marked before they’d even left the club. He hadn’t been able to resist. Especially once he’d snuck into the dancer’s dressing room and been surrounded by the most delicious scent…

“What are you doing in here? Other than fondling my clothes?”

Sitting on the battered couch, Adam looked up from the silk dress shirt he’d been rubbing his fingers over to the owner of said shirt. Standing just inside the dressing room, wearing nothing more than his sweat and a short dressing gown, the dancer looked good enough to eat.

“I watched you dance tonight.” His voice came out husky as he laid his cards on the table. “I want you.”

The dancer’s slim shoulders slumped. “Look, don’t take it personally, but what I do up on stage is an act. It’s meant to tantalize and encourage the patrons to spend their cash. However, I never date customers, nor am I promiscuous. So if you’re looking for a hook-up, a one-night stand, or a fling, I’m not interested. I’m not about to bare my throat or drop to my knees in submission because you happen to be the Alpha of the nearest bear pack.”

Dropping the shirt on the cushion next to him, Adam stood. “First of all, if I caught you dating anyone, I’d probably rip his arms off, and second? There is little chance of you leaving this room unmarked.” He stepped up to the smaller man. When he was close enough he could feel the other man’s heat, he held out his hand. “I’m Adam Brenner and you, baby, are my destined mate.”

A chuckle nearly passed his lips as he offered his arm to Connor. His mate gave him a confused look, which he just smiled at. It was the same look Connor had given him before he’d pressed his smaller mate up against the closed door of the dressing room…

“Wait.” Fingers buried themselves in Adam’s hair, attempting to pull his mouth away from the tempting feast under his lips. A low rumble escaped his throat. His bear did not like the fact their mate was denying them. “Please, we need to talk about this…”

He ran his hand up under the edge of the short robe to cup one taut globe of his mate’s ass. “About?” He nudged aside the collar of the robe, seeking more the delicious scent – this time directly from the source.

“This! It’s not supposed to be like this. There’s an order we have to follow.” Connor’s chest heaved under his exploring tongue.

“You don’t say…” He toyed the belt securing the robe that hid his mate’s body from him. It took little effort on his part to untie it. His bear’s claws shredded the double knot with ease.

“But…aren’t we supposed to date first, get to know each other, then we appear before the Council…” Connor’s face flushed when Adam pushed the offending material off his shoulders.

“Like they are going to deny me my mate.” Adam growled, his eyes raking over the lightly muscled form in front of him. His gaze dropped to the long, slender cock standing out from his mate’s groin. He wrapped a calloused palm around the flesh, savoring the way his mate leaked over his fist. Connor arched toward him, his hands clawing at Adam’s shirt. “Mine.” He eyed the spot between Connors neck and shoulder. It would be the perfect spot for his bite. He growled and leaned forward.

“Wait!” Connor jerked free of his hold.

He narrowed his gaze. “You’re refusing my mark?” It was the last thing he’d expected.

The smaller man shook his head, his eyes raking over Adam. “I…before you do, I want more than a lust filled weekend, here and there.”

Taking a deep breath, he understood his mate’s fears. Shifters were notorious for mating, then abandoning their mates until the next full moon brought the return of the mating frenzy. Except for his pack. Once a Brenner Bear mated, that was it. “Once I claim you, you’re mine. We shall live together, love together…”

Hope filled Connor’s eyes. “Love?”

He nodded.

Connor chewed on his lip. “Does it mean I’ll have to give up my dancing?”

He pulled the smaller man into his arms. “You’ll always be free to dance…” he nuzzled the man’s shoulder, licking the skin, prepping it for his mark. “…as long as I get to watch.” Then he sank his fangs deep. His mate cried out and the scent of spilled seed reached his nose as Connor crested in his arms…

“Good thoughts, husband?” Connor whispered as Adam guided him back down the aisle.

“Only the best, baby.” He lifted Connor’s hand to his lips.

Be sure to stop by the rest of these peeps. :)

House of Manlove Flash: Valentine's Day Hop (Feb 14-20th)

When I saw this blog hop on Facebook, I just had to participate. As a reader I love reading follow ups on my favorite couples, so as an author I adore it even more. (Which is probably why I write so many series...I get to peek in on my former characters.) Of course as soon as I heard about this hop, my brain immediately went to my first big m/m book with Decadent Publishing, His Just Desserts. I fell in love with both Isaiah and Sean - despite their stubbornness.  So what you have below...is a delicious peek at what my sexy chef and his attorney have been up to since we left them so long ago.  (Also...don't forget to stop by the rest of the contributors...CLICK HERE.)

Original Title

Baked with Love (1196 words)

"What the hell…” Sean Whitcomb scanned the neatly printed recipe next to him. Confusion swamped him. “…do they mean place the jam in a piping bag?”

Around him the kitchen looked like a tornado had hit it. Piles of flour, clumps of butter and broken egg shells littered the surface of what had once been his husband’s clean island counter top. In the sink were several bowls with his previous failed attempts at dough. There was even a roll of parchment paper half unraveled and dangling off the counter next to it.

“How does Isaiah always make this look so easy?” He raked his sticky fingers through his blond curls, uncaring if he coated the strands with dough. If it had been any other day than Valentine’s Day, he’d have simply gotten the ingredients. Then suggest in a sexy manner that his man help him in the kitchen. As a chef, Isaiah had taken him up on such an offer more than once.

“Instead he’s working tonight at the restaurant.” Sean jerked open a drawer. It would help if he had a clue what a damn a piping bag was. “I should’ve never listened to that fool! I should’ve just gotten him chocolates, but that damned pastry chef said this dessert was easy. That Isaiah would jump my bones if I made it.”

Sean froze. “Rostislav! He’ll know what a piping bag is.” Fumbling open his cell phone, he dialed Nonlia’s. He wasn’t surprised when Kaeli, the Front of House Manager, answered.

“Hey Kaeli, it’s me - Sean. I need to talk to…”

“Isaiah? Let me see if your man is around. But let me warn you, he’s been on the warpath tonight. His new sous chef didn’t show and Laco called in sick.”

“Wait! Don’t! I need to talk to Rostislav – it’s about this damned recipe.”

“Oh…really?” A low chuckle filled his ear. “Well, that’s different. He just got done presenting Bananas Foster to a couple celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. Let me grab him before he heads back to the kitchen.”

Moments later, the slightly Russian-accented voice of Nonlia’s pastry chef came on the line. After he explained the problem, Rostislav sighed.

“Look in the canvas tote I dropped off. There should be a plastic tip and white triangular bag...”

Squeezing the phone between his ear and shoulder, Sean scooted around the island, only to slip on the broken egg he’d forgotten to clean up.

“Shit!”

He stumbled before knocking his elbow on the edge of the granite counter. Pain lanced up his arm as he struggled to regain his balance. Then he heard a large snap. Horror filled him. The canvas bag under his left foot mocked him.

“Please – don’t let it be broken!” Retrieving the tote, he dumped the remaining contents onto the counter. The plastic bag fell out along with several pieces of what used to be a red plastic tip. “Damn it!”

“What happened?” Rostislav’s concern filtered through the phone.

“I broke the damned tip.” Wadding up the canvas tote, Sean tossed it across the kitchen. Tears threatened. “Fuck it, I’m not a chef. I’ll just buy him chocolates.”

“Whoa. Slow down, Sean. If you’re ready to pipe the jam, you’re over half way done. Did the dough turn out?”

“Yeah, but how am I gonna finish it without the piping bag? Isaiah be home in less than an hour. I don’t have time –”

Rostislav’s chuckle surprised him. “Got any Ziploc bags?”

* * * *

Isaiah Waterston-Whitcomb groaned as he exited his car. It’d been a long night at Nonlia’s. He’d been anxious to head home to his husband ever since Kaeli had told him he was going to be down two men.

Shoving the key into the lock of their Tudor style house, Isaiah was struck by a sense of homecoming. The perfect home with a small guest house out back for Berta, his former roommate and best friend. It had been the perfect second year anniversary present - and everything he’d dreamed.

“Babe?” He placed his keys on the hook next to the door, looking around for Sean.

“In here.”

Following Sean’s voice into the kitchen, he stared in shock at the carnage of what had once been his immaculate domain. His temper, normally even no matter what mess his cooking-challenged husband made, finally exploded.

“What the fuck!”

“I tried to bake for you.” Sean popped up from behind the island, a paper towel in his hand. From the smeared yellow on it, Isaiah could only assume it was egg. “I baked for you.”

His anger died a sudden death when he took in his sexy lawyer’s clothing. Even smeared in flour and something red, Sean looked beyond edible.

“Aw, babe.” Picking his way over to his man, he pulled Sean into his arms. “I’m sorry I snapped. Rough night.” Tugging down Sean’s head, he ran his tongue across his husband’s lower lip before delving inside to entwine with Sean’s.

As usual, the passion that always simmered beneath the surface exploded as Isaiah tasted a hint of his favorite fruit. Sean’s arm wrapped around his waist and Isaiah found himself pulled between his husband’s slightly splayed legs. By the time, he released Sean’s mouth, his lover’s cock was hard against his. “Damn, you taste like raspberries.”

The flush of arousal on his husband’s face sent Isaiah’s libido into overdrive. He wanted to put his piss-ass night behind him and celebrate Valentine’s Day – in bed with his man. “Come on…” He snared Sean’s wrist with his hand. But when he tugged, Sean seemed to snap out of it.

“Wait!”

“Why? I’ve thought of nothing more than sinking deep inside you as you hold me, since my night went to hell. I’m desperate.” He brushed his fingers over Sean’s cheek. “Please?”

Sean groaned. “Just a second. I made these for you.”

He watched as Sean pivoted to grab something behind him.

“Here, baked with love.” Sean thrust out a plate.

Two beautifully imperfect heart-shaped cookies rested on top of a folded paper. His heart softened. The slightly crooked edges were a testament of Sean’s love. His husband hated to cook.

“What’s this?”

“Raspberry-filled Butter Cookies.” Sean eyed him hopefully.

Touched that Sean had baked for him, he took a bite out of one, determined to enjoy it, even if it was the worst thing he’d ever tasted. To his surprise, the buttery flavor and tartness of the raspberries was delicious. “Yum.” He shoved the rest of it into his mouth, chewing fast. Swallowing, he shot Sean his “I want to fuck you now” look. “Bedroom – now.”

“Read the paper first,” Sean begged.

Growling, he snatched the document up. As he scanned it, joy flooded him. “We’re gonna be daddies?” He caught Sean’s gaze.

Sean nodded. “The agency called. We can pick up little Angelina tomorrow, if we want.”

“Hell yeah, I want. But first I’m going to rock your world, Mr. Whitcomb.” He dragged his chuckling husband toward their bedroom. If Isaiah had his way, Sean wouldn’t laugh for long. He’d be too busy moaning. After all it was Valentine’s Day – the day of lovers. Tomorrow, they’d be parents.

So after writing this flash, I realized that there may be some readers who would like the recipe for the delightful Raspberry Butter Cookies that Sean attempted to make for his lover. CLICK HERE. (Personally I've tried it...and they are absolutely delicious.)

Now, don't forget to stop by the rest of the hop!
